Brazilian police officers have apprehanded smugglers by speeding their patrol
car down a remote runway and smashing into an airplane so it couldn't take off
with a load of contraband electronics.
A video posted a few days ago shows the police car chasing the plane. The
passenger-side officer leans out the window with an automatic rifle, preparing
to fire. But the officer driving, apparently afraid that the shots might ignite
the airplane's fuel which is usually kept in the wings, shouts "I'm going to hit
the wing, I'm going to hit the wing! Do not shoot!"
Seconds later the car smashes into the single-engine aircraft, stopping it
before it could take off.
The officers then hop out of the car and surround the airplane.
Brazil Federal Police spokesman Edson Geraldo de Souza later explained that all
five people in the airplane were arrested. The police have also seized a
cargo which included notebooks, electronic surveillance equipment and a bicycle,
all together worth about $200,000. Nobody was hurt.
