The GTS badge was last attached to VW's second-generation Golf-based coupe
exactly 30 years ago. The new 2012 VW Scirocco GTS exhibits a number of unique
styling elements that hark back to its predecessor.
Most apparent are the red and black racing stripes that run along the bonnet,
roof and rear hatch, and the red mirror caps. The 18-inch wheels, red brake
calipers, edgy front and rear bumpers, flared side skirts, rear spoiler and
diffuser, and GTS badges contribute to the bespoke look.
The color scheme continues into the cabin with black plastics and leather
contrasted with red stitching across the seats, handbrake, gear stick and
steering wheel. The golf ball-inspired manual gear knob, similar to that in the
new Volkswagen Golf GTI Edition 35, is another nod to the brand's sporting
pedigree.
Under the bonnet sits the 208-hp 2.0-liter turbocharged petrol engine from the
Golf GTI, which sees the Scirocco accelerate from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds and on
to a top speed of 148 mph (238 km/h).
